Pascal Girard

Nicolas is a moving debut work by Quebecois cartoonist Pascal Girard. The book is presented as a series of short autobiographical vignettes that take place after the childhood death of his younger brother, Nicolas, who passed away in 1990. Each episode taken from Girard's childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood offers a glimpse into his multifaceted and ongoing process of reckoning, as he struggles to reconcile the magnitude of this tragedy with the minutiae of his daily experience of loss. Nicolas unfolds as a delicate portrait of the many faces of mourning, identified with surprising humor and pathos by an artist who knows them intimately.

Pascal Girard was born in Jonquiere in 1981. He began filling the margins of his notebooks with drawings from his first day of school. As he was never able to rid himself of this good habit he naturally decided to make it his career. He received his interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts from the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi in 2004. Since then he moved to Quebec City and currently divides his time between his illustration career and drawing comics. His first two books, dans un cruchon and nicolas, shared the Real-Fillion prize at the Quebec Francophone Comics Festival in 2006.
