Anomaly is the much-anticipated novel from Anne Fleming, whose first book, Pool-Hopping, was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize and the Danuta Gleed Award, and which Publishers Weekly called “ruthlessly precise” and “a bracing, truthful debut.”

Anomaly centres on four voices: two sisters who grow to adulthood during the 1970s, their conflicted mother and an elderly neighbour. This is a novel about lost time and space, in the fashion of Rick Moody’s Ice Storm. It also explores the notion of “sisterhood,” particularly how two girls navigate their turbulent relationship. The overarching theme is loss of innocence: for four characters whose lives are intertwined and for Toronto, a complex city evolving during a pivotal decade into an international urban centre.

Anne Fleming (Vancouver) grew up in Toronto and received her MFA from the University of British Columbia. Her short fiction was selected for 2004’s annual Toronto Life fiction issue and won a National Magazine Award.
