Pavel & I

Dan Vyleta

Set in Berlin in the winter of 1946, one of the coldest on record, Pavel & I mines the messy post-war terrain through the lives of Pavel, an American soldier, and Anders, a German orphan. A friendship of mutual need and genuine tenderness develops as the two find themselves caught in the web of Cold War conspiracy. A dead Russian spy is delivered to Pavel’s apartment. Is it a warning for him to end his affair with the German mistress of a menacing British official?

Hints of Graham Greene’s The Third Man interpreted through the existential lens of Paul Auster put Vyleta in the same league as William Boyd.

“Vyleta conjures a convincing postwar Berlin in all of its moral ambiguity.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Vyleta pens an intricately creative tale pillared by a historical framework that illuminates and strengthens the story.” (Booklist)

DAN VYLETA (Edmonton) is the son of Czech refugees who emigrated to Germany in the late 1960s. He holds a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge. He lives and works in Edmonton, Alberta. Pavel & I is his first novel.
