Old Mother Bear
Victoria Miles
illustrated by Molly Bang
Through evocative, poetic text by the Canadian author of Wild Science and luminous chalk paintings by a three-time Caldecott Honor Book artist, children will learn the true-to-nature life of a mother grizzly bear.
Grizzly bears are especially popular following the success of the film Grizzly Man. In Old Mother Bear we watch a mother grizzly dig a winter den, raise three cubs and hunt for food, and we witness her cubs growing up while she grows old. At the end the mother dies of old age, teaching children about grizzlies in the context of the cycle of life.
An afterword provides information about the range and habitat of grizzly bears and the many challenges to their survival in the wild.
Victoria Miles (North Vancouver, British Columbia) is the author of a novel, Magnifico, and Wild Science: Amazing Encounters between Animals and the People Who Study Them, as well as many other books and short stories for children.
Molly Bang (California and Massachusetts) is the author/illustrator of three Caldecott Honor Books: When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry ...; Ten, Nine, Eight; and The Grey Lady and the Strawberry Snatcher. She is also the author/artist of The Paper Crane, winner of the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Illustration, and Dawn, a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Book.
