Taking Things Seriously

75 Objects with Unexpected Significance

Joshua Glenn and Carol Hayes

In the office of any creative, passionate individual there will be an item that may not appear valuable but is displayed as if it were a priceless artifact. Taking Things Seriously highlights 75 items like this, from a soda bottle to a rubber pig, from a death mask to a shrivelled artichoke.

Contributors include writers, musicians, designers, artists, cartoonists and architects such as Chika Azuma, Mark Kingwell, Mark Newgarden, Tony Millionaire and Luc Sante. Each identifies his or her significant object and explains the story behind keeping what most people would throw away.

JOSHUA GLENN (Boston) writes for the Boston Globe, the Idler and the London Observer. He is publisher of Hermenaut, one of the few indispensable critical forums of the 1990s.

CAROL HAYES (Brooklyn) is an award-winning designer who has worked for Little Brown, the Sundance Channel, Nickelodeon and Domino magazine.
