D.I.Y. Kids

Ellen Lupton and Julia Lupton

Parents; aunts and uncles; babysitters; educators in schools, museums, camps and after-school programs; and young readers themselves will love exploring the design principles in D.I.Y Kids. Accessible and hands-on, the book shows kids how to make their own graphics, toys, gifts, wearable art, party items and more. Aimed at the ’tween age group, the projects can also be done by younger children with some guidance.

The sections are “Graphics” (including scrapbooking), “Fashion” and “Home and Hospitality” (make your own magnets, cards and stationery). All projects are explained with step-by-step instructions and colourful photographs of cool projects and the kids who make them. Kids will be creating not only the content but also most of the process themselves, using recycled and repurposed materials.

ELLEN LUPTON is a curator at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and teaches design at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is the author of D.I.Y. Design it Yourself, Thinking with Type, Design Culture Now and Mixing Messages.

JULIA LUPTON teaches at the University of California. She is the author of Citizen-Saints: Shakespeare and Political Theory and Afterlives of the Saints: Hagiography, Typography and Renaissance Literature.
