The Grand Tour in Photo Albums

Designed by Martin Venezky, the designer of It Is Beautiful Then It Is Gone and Snapshot Chronicles, this visual exploration uses the vernacular photographs and ephemera found in photo albums and travel diaries to place the albums in context within the broader scope of early leisure travel.

Around the World is written for both the scholarly and the non-academic reader. It consists of two sections: the first includes a prologue and essay that address the inter-relationship between the journey taken and the urge to share its exploits, and the intersection of both with technology and the tourist industry. The second section provides a virtual trip around the world by using a selected number of travel albums dating between 1880 and 1930, and concludes with an epilogue.

BARBARA LEVINE is an established collector of vernacular photography and ephemera.
