At a Crossroads

Between a Rock and My Parents’ Place

Kate T. Williamson

A sequel to A Year in Japan, this graphic memoir uses watercolours and handwritten text to tell the story of the author returning to her parents’ home after her trip to Japan to work on her book. She planned to stay three months but stayed 23 instead.

Based on her diary of that time, Williamson uses her sharp wit and expressive drawings to illustrate the joys, disappointments, comforts and embarrassments of the common, yet little-discussed, “boomerang years”—life back home with Mom and Dad. Highlights and low points include celebrating her 24th birthday at a Hall & Oates concert with her mother, battling an infestation of squirrels, and discovering that the ballet class she has signed up for is actually for children and attending anyway.

KATE T. WILLIAMSON (New York City) is the author of A Year in Japan, Hello Kitty Through the Seasons!, Hello Kitty Hello Sparkle! and Hello Kitty Everywhere! She is a writer and illustrator who studied filmmaking at Harvard University.
