Carlo Collodi

illustrated by Gris Grimly

introduction by Guillermo del Toro

An introduction by Guillermo del Toro, director of the Academy Award-winning Netflix original movie!

It took one look at Gris' design for me to be convinced that. . . this was 'the' Pinocchio ." - Guillermo del Toro

This edition has the full text of the original Pinocchio with a mixture of full-page and spot illustrations in black and white integrated in the text, in pen-and-ink style. The ink is sepia brown.

Once there was a lonely woodcutter named Geppetto-who dreamed of having a boy of his own. So one day he carved a boy out of wood and named him Pinocchio.

When the puppet comes to life, it's Geppetto's dream come true.

Except Pinocchio turns out to be not such a nice boy after all. Pinocchio enjoys nothing better than creating mischief and playing mean tricks. As he discovers, being bad is much more fun than being good.

For a while, anyway.

Happily for Pinocchio, he will learn that there is much more to being a real boy than having fun.

A magical tale that has entertained children of all ages for more than a hundred years, this lavishly and gorgeously illustrated new edition is the perfect introduction of a timeless classic to a new generation of readers.

And that's no lie!

Carlo Collodi (born Carlo Lorenzini in Florence, 1826) was an Italian children's writer and most famous for his children's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio . Involved in political matters, he wrote satires during the Wars of Independence, going on to found a satirical newspaper Il Lampione ( The Streetlight ). He won fame with a novel, In Vapore, before focusing on children's literature as a way to explore political allegory. He began writing Storia di un burattino ( Story of a Marionette ), serialised in Il Giornale dei Bambine ( The Children's Newspaper ). This story would later come to be known as The Adventures of Pinnochio . Collodi died in his native city in 1890, aged 63. Gris Grimly is the illustrator of many books for young readers, including The Cockatrice Boy by Joan Aiken and A Collection of Edgar Allan Poe . He lives in Los Angeles. Grimly's illustrations for Carlo Collodi's classic Pinocchio inspired Guillermo del Toro's designs in his animated adaptation Guillermo del Toro is the award-winning director of numerous critically acclaimed feature films, such as Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, Pacific Rim, and The Shape of Water (Oscar Award winner, Best Picture). He is also the co-author (with Chuck Hogan) of the bestselling Strain Trilogy. Del Toro lives in California with his wife and two children.
