Womankind began when writer Donna Nebenzahl and photographer Nance Ackerman became inspired by the work of women activists they knew. They decided to seek out women who were guiding similar initiatives around the world. An essay on each woman transports us into her world, offering words of advice, experience and hope. The accompanying photograph-reproduced in rich duotones-invites us to read a story in each face. Whether these women are world-renowned (Robin Morgan, Jody Williams or Nawal el Saadawi) or local heroes, all are justly celebrated. Womankind invites us to travel with the authors and to witness the accomplishments of 47 extraordinary human beings.
Donna Nebenzahl is an editor and writer at the Montreal Gazette in Montreal, Canada. Nance Ackerman is a photojournalist whose work has been featured in Time, Maclean's and Canadian Geographic. She lives in Nova Scotia.
