This groundbreaking book introduces nine engaging fictional characters and, through their stories, young readers are transported to nine pivotal moments in Canadian history. Each chapter opens with a fictionalized account of a morning, afternoon, and evening in a child's day in a different time period. These compelling stories open up a window onto places and times vastly different from a modern child's world -- yet readers will stumble upon many similarities as well. They will join a First Nations boy on the Great Plains in 1680 as he prepares for his first buffalo hunt, experience a day in the life of a boy whose family fled to Canada via the Underground Railroad, and meet a privileged girl in Toronto at the turn of the twentieth century among others. Each story is woven throughout with rich details of daily life -- eating, dressing, transportation, entertainment, family relationships, and living arrangements -- resulting in unparalleled snapshots of life on a Canadian day. Photo essays featuring archival photos between each chapter place each story in historical context.
Ages 9-13.
