Frieda Wishinsky

illustrated by Jean-Paul Eid

Emily and Matt have seen the movies, they've read the books, and they've learned in school what pioneer life was like -- but nothing could have prepared them for the adventure they are about to have. It's Ontario in the early 1800s and much of it is still wilderness. Emily and Matt meet John, who is responsible for ensuring that his mother and younger siblings reach their father and their new plot of land. Together they travel rough roads through uncharted forests and down untamed rivers only to reach overcrowded inns and other unforeseen delays on their journey from Montreal. To top it all off, John fears for his mother's health -- her child is due to be born any day. Can Emily and Matt help John shoulder this huge responsibility?

Ages 6-9.
